Michele’s Granola was a proud sponsor of Common Good City Farm’s “A Night on the Farm” fundraising dinner on October 6. What, you may ask, does a small batch granola bakery based in Baltimore have to do with a DC-based farm? Plenty!
Farms and farmers’ markets play a big role in the founding and evolution of Michele’s Granola: It was 10 years ago when Michele brought her first batch of homemade granola to her local farmers’ market in DC and quickly sold out. During this time, Michele met and got to know many of the farmers supplying fresh food to her region. The produce and flavors of the seasons became (and continue to be) a tremendous influence on the palette of flavors in Michele’s granola line. Pumpkin Spice granola, Toasted Muesli sweetened with Maryland maple syrup, fall’s Apple Quinoa granola—featuring organic apple juice and sauce from local farms—all grew out of Michele’s connection to farms.
Common Good City Farm is first and foremost a farm, but it’s a very special one: It’s deeply rooted in the urban DC community and grows not only sustainable, local produce for their neighborhood, but also opportunities. Common Good offers a weekly farm stand and a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) Program, but it also offers hands-on farming programs, a youth education program, and a variety of regular workshops providing low-income families with access to and support in preparing fresh, nutritious food.
